How I transformed my holiday photos into a gift for my parents
My parents have a lot of pictures of me as a child, but a little less to adolescence (here’s to the awkward age), and not more than adulthood. I don’t like just not to be taken in photo. In fact, the most recent photo they have of me to date there are about five years old and I’m wearing a dress style in Seventeenth-century (it’s a long story…). So I decided last Christmas to repair it by offering a Photo Book – this should satisfy for at least five years.
The development of my plan started well before Christmas. In the fall, I’m on vacation in Japan, a country that I love and that I visited several times already. During my absences, my parents came to move in with me and take care of my cat. To thank them, I decided to document my journey with a series of selfies secret, never published on social networks, and who have not seen the light of day in this album.
I took a photo in front of temples or in the ancient streets. I took selfies when I was in the face of “attacks” dinosaur animatronics or statues of frogs samurai. I had imagined it as a highlight of the album, a shot of me in front of Mount Fuji and the famous pagoda Chureito, a bit like this one :
But after climbing with difficulty a steep slope for 20 minutes under the drizzle, the result was the following :
Yes, it was a ton of clouds to the place of Mount Fuji.
My parents had heard this whole story ; how I have waited over an hour in the hope that the clouds dissipate and that my legs are recovering, but they have actually found the photo of my face sweating/any red on Christmas day. There are really parents in order to love this kind of photo !
And frankly, they love it. I managed to keep my little secret until the morning of Christmas and the result was : they were completely amazed. The album now sits on their coffee table living and they show it to all their guests. I think they friment a bit of a dream holiday their daughter, but they are mostly thrilled that I spent two weeks to think about them and to prepare their own Christmas gift while they stayed home to feed the cat.
A Photo Book A3 – Open flat
If you are wondering what book I chose, I opted for the Book A3 – Opening flat. In making this choice, I could view the panorama of a street in Tokyo on a double-page spread – photographed with my Samsung S7, no camera, out of the price needed here ! – without seeing my photo disappear in the fold. No need to keep the pages flat in order to have a good look at the photos, two people can watch together easily.
This large format allowed me to add multiple photos to some pages and to allow my parents not to squint your eyes to understand what they’re watching. The paper of these books to open flat is also very thick – which turns out to be a great decision given the number of friends of my parents who have peeked at this album !
I made a photo book of 26 pages (this is the minimum size). You can add other pages but as I said above, I hate seeing pictures of me and I managed to take a dozen pictures in half decent ! This year, I will be offering my parents a Photo Book of the cat, he is much more photogenic than me !
