We recently discussed about fertilizers and I have explained how to deal with potted plants. In the garden , instead, what happens? First of all, a clarification. All the plants in pots or in the ground need different amounts of the four main nutrients: nitrogen (promoter of the growth), magnesium (a key element of chlorophyll), phosphorus (promoter of flowering), potassium (for fruit ripening), as well as a series of trace elements as copper, sulfur, magnesium and others.
Having said that, for those in the vase is worth what I have explained in the article dedicated to fertilizers for the plants on the terrace, while for those in the earth, the steps to follow are these.
The choice of fertilizer
Before choosing a fertilizer for any type of plant or tree in your garden, it is advisable for asoil analysis (with samples) to be repeated every two or three years to get to know the existing situation and to be able to adjust the levels of nutrients and PH. This method allows you to take better care of your garden, saving in fertilizers are not needed, and to protect groundwater from excess product.
When to fertilize
The season of the fertilizing of the garden starts in the spring until the end of October and continues throughout the winter with manure, organic or chemical slow release. In march and April with flowering plants, shrubs, trees (the young ones, and those from fruit) and also the turf.
If you use biological fertilizer, remember that it takes at least three or four weeks, depending on the weather conditions, and because the biological fertilizer is dissipated in the soil and plants may take up nutrients. Therefore, you’ll have to give manure to march for the nourishment arrivals in April to the plants.
Fertilization of the lawn
It is the other great protagonist in a garden and he needs all of our attention. A proper program of fertilization must take into account the climate, soil type, exposure, the trend with the season and variety sown. It is good to nourish or fertilize it four times a year, with an interval of three months:
- between the end of February and early march, when the grass is in full growth phase, requires a high amount of nitrogen.
- In the summer, autumn and winter using fertilizers with potassium content higher than the nitrogen to make it more resistant to diseases and to adverse climatic conditions caused by extreme temperatures (heat or frost).
Fertilization the most important is definitely the autumn one , as it allows you to recover the stress of the summer, and prepares for a good root development, with benefits for the whole of next season. If, during the cutting of the lawn is to practice mulching which is the release pulverized in the surface of the mowing of the grass, fertilizers can be reduced by 20% because of the foil grass cut contains nutrients.
How to spread the fertilizer
The fertilization of the lawn is carried out with the same techniques and the same methods of sowing, or spreading of fertilizer by hand or with appropriate machines. It is obvious that to master it, in such cases is the size of the garden. Assuming that you normally do not have the Palace of Versailles, it is absolutely possible and effective to distribute the nourishment to the soil. One recommendation: the fertilizer is to be distributed in a uniform manner.
I would without a shadow of doubt on the granular fertilizer for its qualities of easy availability and convenience in use. Normally on the market there are bags of 25 Kg, which are sufficient for 500 square metres of turf. Prices vary depending on the brand used to be € 35 (Blaukorn Pro) to € 30 (Nitrophoska Gold): these products are slow release that prevents the absorption too fast, with the risk of trauma and “burn-in” of the grass.
For distribute it with a bucket and walk along the lawn to his length several times, taking care with throwing up-tempo to spread the granules evenly throughout the turf. Keep in mind that the average amount of product to distribute in the course of the year, is about three kilograms per hundred square meters. I recommend to use eye and sensitivity to determine the exact amount for your beloved grass!
If you are a perfectionist full of desire and want that your grass is greener than that of your neighbor, to the spring inside a fertilization with granular products in which prevails the iron. Here the prices of the products vary from € 25 to € 19, for 25 kg bags and you will get a colour, vivid and intense. This compound not only makes the lawn more green, but it also fights the moss, one of the weeds the most frequent in our meadows.
